Julia has been creative from a young age, with her interest in art growing during her time at technical college, where she focused on drawing, particularly faces.
She enjoys learning new techniques and working across a range of mediums, much of which has been self-taught or picked up through night classes. Over the years this has included acrylic and watercolour painting, silversmithing, and pottery — she enjoys trying different things and seeing where it leads.
Her work is now centred around observation and reinterpretation. Using her photography as a starting point, she explores form, light, and texture through digital processes, creating pieces that go beyond the original image.
Based in rural Northland and surrounded by nature, her work is influenced by what’s around her. She currently works across photography, digitally reworked imagery, and painting, continuing to explore detail, light, and texture in her own way.
