Creativity has always been part of who I am. For many years it found expression through making and building, but it wasn't until I moved to Mangawhai that I discovered painting.

The vibrant local arts community, together with the support of inspiring teachers and the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, encouraged me to pick up a paintbrush and begin a new creative journey.

My inspiration comes from a lifelong love of boats and the ocean.

Growing up, my father owned wooden and steel-hulled work boats, including small tug boats that worked the Hauraki Gulf and Northland's east coast. Before I could ride a bicycle, I was rowing Dad's clinker dinghy around Mill Bay in Mangonui and exploring the coves of Great Barrier Island. Under his guidance, I even learned to steer a tug boat using landmarks along the shoreline.

Some of my fondest memories are helping Dad restore and repaint our dinghy. Those hours gave me a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship, character and timeless beauty of traditional wooden boats.

Throughout my travels I have admired the many styles of clinker and wooden-planked boats found around the world. Their graceful lines, weathered timber, rich colours and sense of adventure continue to inspire my work.

Many of these boats are now disappearing or falling into disrepair, making them all the more special. Through my paintings I hope to preserve their character and celebrate the stories they carry.
