Greg’s passion for photography began during his career as a horticultural scientist, where he found rewards and challenges in the representation of trees, flowers and fruit. This evolved more recently into the exploration of macroscopic details of insects and flowers, inspired by the work of Levon Biss. Greg’s career also took him to rural areas locally and overseas, resulting in a number of panoramic images (inspired by the work of Peter Latham), and extending to a deeper interest in New Zealand’s natural world and conservation estates. Mangawhai’s environment also holds lots of opportunities for him to record the natural world, from the local bird life to the coastal flora and stark landscapes of the sandspit, where textures abound.

This exhibition

This is Greg’s first full exhibition of his work and has four key themes: “Small Worlds” – an exploration of the detailed forms of local flowers and insects; “Retro” – re-living one’s youth and memories through the well-used toys and edible icons of the day; “Mangawhai Landscapes” – various takes on the local environment; and “Flights of Fancy” – recording our local avian fauna. Through each of these themes, he tries to get new perspectives on objects that we otherwise pass by without further thought. Each has a natural story behind them.

JanMaree Vodanovich is a New Zealand artist and photographer whose creative practice spans photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, and installation work. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, majoring in photography, and has spent much of her life exploring the relationship between humans, animals, landscape, and spirit through visual storytelling.

Her work has been exhibited throughout New Zealand and recognised both nationally and internationally through awards including the NZIPP Iris Awards, the WPE Awards, and the North Shore National Salon of Photography. Alongside fine art practice, JanMaree has worked professionally in portraiture, documentary, commercial photography, and commissioned artwork.

For more than twenty years she has photographed the wild Kaimanawa horse herds of the central North Island, developing a deeply personal body of work that culminated in her recently completed book Heart and Soul – A Kaimanawa Story. Her work often explores themes of belonging, resilience, connection, identity, and the quiet emotional spaces shared between humans and animals.

Strongly influenced by nature, wild landscapes, mythology, Indigenous symbolism, and human emotion, JanMaree’s style moves between documentary realism and expressive, intuitive storytelling. She works across multiple mediums, often combining painterly texture, symbolism, movement, and atmosphere to create emotionally resonant works that invite reflection and connection.

Looking ahead, she hopes to continue expanding her creative practice through large-scale exhibitions, books, sculpture, painting, and immersive storytelling projects centred around horses, nature, and human connection.

This exhibition marks both a major photographic exhibition and the official launch of Heart and Soul – A Kaimanawa Story, a deeply personal book project created over almost twenty years documenting New Zealand’s wild Kaimanawa horse herds.

Through photography and mixed media, the exhibition explores themes of freedom, resilience, connection, identity, and the profound emotional relationship between humans and horses. The works move between documentary realism and expressive storytelling, capturing not only the physical beauty of the horses and their environment, but also the deeper sense of spirit, community, and wildness they embody.

Heart and Soul is an intimate visual journey into the world of Aotearoa’s wild heritage horses — from the vast landscapes of the central North Island to the emotional stories of the horses and humans whose lives have become intertwined through the annual Kaimanawa muster and rehoming process.

At its heart, both the exhibition and the book are a celebration of these remarkable horses, the people who protect them, and the enduring connection between wildness, compassion, and belonging.
